Have you heard about the virtues of standing up while working?

Standing up while working makes you more productive and provides health benefits. Research is showing  that standing up while you work, instead of sitting down, is better for your back, hips, knees, ankles, metabolism, and your mind.

Sitting is the new smoking!

Why should we stand up? We should stand simply because sitting down is just plain unhealthy. Many  articles on standing up are making the national news.

For example here is an excerpt from an article titled “Stand Up For Your Health”.

“Sitting is the most harmful thing we can do — and we do too much of it. A review published in The Journal of the National Cancer Institute confirms what we’ve been hearing for years: Sitting can be fatal. It has been linked to cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.”

For some time now, there have been articles in magazines about the negative effects of sitting down all the time, and why we should stand more. But there were not a lot of alternatives for the average person. Some took action trying everything from very quaint efforts to buying expensive devices. You could prop up a standard office desk with a mason brick under each leg. It looks crazy but it works. Or you could buy an electric-powered sit/stand adjustable desk.

But more recently, standing up while working has become very popular because people are becoming more aware of the negative effects of constantly sitting! Consequently, the “stand up while you work” industry is booming. Amazon’s web site for example, is filled with small platforms that sit on top of your desk or counter, so that you can put your computer on it allowing you to stand up.

You no longer have to use bricks, or spend hundreds of dollars to stand while working.

The bottom line is that standing up while you work isn’t just a healthier way to work, it’s also a more productive way to work.
